The Call of Duty franchise, along with countless others, was a driving force behind what is now a robust and shelf dominating boom for first person shooters. I remember Mike showing me the original demo on his PC and I was immediately blown away.

Before Call of Duty, Medal of Honor dominated WWII shooters but since Infinity Ward created the original masterpiece plenty has changed. This time around the biggest change comes with the development team, gone from the helm is Infinity Ward and in its place enters Treyarch.

Now I’m not too hardcore on shooters but I know great games and great developers, so needless to say I was a bit sceptical about the change in creative teams. Much of my fear was dimished because of the way that the team at Treyarch, mostly, stayed true to the vision of there development bretheren. The game plays like Call of Duty should. CoD3 play fast, intense, via different perspectives and this time around in much closer quarters.

That’s one of the things I really liked about the game, and really made the game instantly feel more intense. The closeness of your allies and enemies is stunning with some even challenging you to hand to hand combat instead of the gun based battles. My biggest hurdle when playing this game was re-enlisting for another virtual tour of World War II, I mean how many WWII shooters have come out in the last year? And this one’s isn’t near the elite games to cover the sacrifices of those great men and women who made this world better.

Visually this game is on par with a game like Resistance, a fellow FPS and, a launch brother of CoD3 but even Resistance hasn’t scratched the surface of what the PS3 is capable of achieving in the graphical department. The controller is, and continues, to be an issue with shooters on a Sony console. It’s not that they’re terrible but if you’ve played on an Xbox controller you can feel the superiority, throw in a gimmicky Six-Axis which is less hit than miss and just like the overall experience this game is nothing more than middle of the road.

Its fun and definitely worth a run through via rental, but when the guys and gals you took over for do it better, you’ve got a problem. Call of Duty 3 isn’t exceptional but by no means is it an utter failure either. The bigger issue is that the genre and way more in particular the subject matter has been overdone and with a muddled market this one just lays somewhere in the middle and my friends Call of Duty is better than that.

Graphics: Like many of the PS3 launch titles the visuals aren’t vastly superior than the quality we have already seen.

Story: Another representation of the events that happened during WWII… how long did the war last again?

Gameplay: It’s Call of Duty alright, but oddly enough it just never feels quite right.

Music and Sound FX: I liked the tunes they set a pretty convincing mood, intense, comforting, heroic when needed.

Game Over: Now in its third, numbered, iteration may be it was due for the franchise to take a step backwards, or may be I came in biased because of the change in developers. Any way you put it this game wasn’t on par with the previous Call of Duty games.
