Splinter Cell: Double Agent

January 1, 2006

This here is the story of the ugly duckling, except this is real life and there is no happily ever after ending. It’s really a shame because Splinter Cell has been a really good, if not great franchise, but this version for the Wii is terrible. The graphics are nowhere near the other systems, even “last-gen” and for some inexplicable reason someone thought that tying the camera to the motion of the Wii-mote was a good idea… its not. Having to keep your hand affixed is as fun as it sounds because any sudden movement could cause you to become lost in the surroundings. Games like these continue placing a black eye on a system that will only survive with the emergence of 3rd party developers as well as the innovation of the Wii-mote. So far there has been help from 3rd party developers but with efforts like this how long will they continue their support, and with the Wii-mote really nothing more than a gimmick in these early goings how long before we the gamers begin to turn our attention elsewhere? Don’t get me wrong I see what Ubisoft was going for and for the most part I liked it, however it just, for some reason, didn’t work on the Wii. Honestly I’d give this game another go on a different console.

Graphics: I thought I had accidentally turned on my N64 and was playing Rainbow Six.

Story: Grittier and more in tense that the last couple Splinter Cells but not the end all story most expected, but still real good.

Gameplay: Definitely liked what they were thinking, but with a camera so poor it’s hard to maneuver everything.

Music and Sound FX: Definitely high quality for a truly cinematic experience too bad the visuals couldn’t keep up on the Wii.

Game Over: Plain and simple this version is inferior to the others. The lack of a complex control scheme and the graphical horsepower doomed the Wii version as it felt somewhat unnatural to play and really unappealing to the eyes.
