Time’s Top 10 Video Games of 2009

December 10, 2009

It’s the end of the year and Time has released its annual Top 10 of Everything extravaganza. We all love reading these types of lists and I’ll likely spend a few hours perusing over the top 10 news stories, the top 100 movies, and dreaming of the day RRB Games will make Time’s 50 Best Websites. Hey, it can happen!

Among the myriad of interesting lists is Time’s Top 10 Video Games of 2009. It lists some games that are obvious, like Modern Warfare 2 and Uncharted 2, but also there are a few surprises. Under-the-radar titles like Geo Defense Swarm for the iPhone and Scribblenauts make the list.

Here is what they had to say about the #1 game, Modern Warfare 2:

“This is a game that sends a message: Video games have something intelligent to say about contemporary military conflicts. In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, you hop around the globe, chasing the front lines of globalized, asymmetrical combat, where not everybody wears uniforms, war isn’t always declared, and the battlefield isn’t clearly marked — battles rage through suburbs, airports and people’s living rooms. There’s tons of raw, riveting military action in Modern Warfare 2, but it’s very much about how the game has changed: limiting civilian casualties and figuring out whom to fight and why are just as important as staying alive.”

And here is the full list:

1. Modern Warfare 2

2. Batman: Arkham Asylum

3. DJ Hero

4. Borderlands

5. New Super Mario Bros. Wii

6. Geo Defense Swarm

7. Scribblenauts

8. Halo 3: ODST

9. Assassin’s Creed 2

10. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

What do you think? Did MW2 deserve the top spot? Was Uncharted 2 robbed??
