I have always been a huge Star Wars fan, and when I heard about Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and saw what the game was going to be capable of, needless to say it was all I could do to keep from throttling the nearest person out of sheer excitement. When I played the demo it was even harder.
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed gives a different perspective on the destructive power of the force and has good story to go along with it. You begin the game as Darth Vader on the Wookie planet of Kashyyyk to hunt down a Jedi in hiding. After raising enough hell (on both sides) you encounter a Jedi who can be quickly despatched of. After the battle you encounter a young boy who is strong in the force enough to strip the Dark Lord of the Sith of his lightsaber. This young boy becomes Darth Vader’s apprentice and you take control of him as and Vader informs you that he wants you to assist him in overthrowing the Emperor. After this stunning revelation he sends you out on various missions across the galaxy to wreck havoc and achieve greater strength for the hostile takeover.
From there on the out it’s a hack and slash, force power blazing battle through various planets in the galaxy. Throughout the game you encounter a lot new species and new worlds. There are some familiars thrown in there and a pleasant surprise at the end. Also each level allows you explore the true power of the force whether it’s ripping a TIE Fighter out of the sky as it flies past, hurling Darth Maul (Yes! I said Darth Maul) off the screen with blast from force push, or battling the Emperor in the first Death Star.
As the story grows it bridges the gap between Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars IV: A New Hope. You discover the roots of the Rebellion and the systematic hunt of the remaining Jedi after the fall of the Old Republic.
Even though I am a die hard Star Wars fan and I’ve played, read, and watch anything Star Wars I would not be doing gamers justice if I gave a biased review. This is a good game but there are still issues. First, throughout the whole experience is the load times in the menu. It especially gets annoying when you forget something and you have to go back. Second, the camera angles can be kind of pain at times when enemies are higher than you are. Third, the sound is good because it’s Star Wars however, I think that rather than always relying on the same tunes they should introduce a few new tunes.
What I liked about this game was the story. It fills in the gap and it introduces new characters. It also builds history with characters that you may be already familiar with. What I really liked about it was that it shows you the cunning and ruthlessness of Darth Vader. Sure you see it in the movies and the books if you read them but, this game takes it up a notch. The little surprise they throw in is pretty cool as well but, I won’t spoil that for you. You’ll just have to beat the game to find out. =D
CnB, Out!
Final Verdict: PRAISE IT!!!
