Let’s get this out of the way. Prince of Persia is a really, really easy game. The real question is, is that good or bad? For those seeking a challenge worthy of the likes of Ninja Gaiden or even Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, it’s not. Because everything is so automatic, from wall runs to walking on narrow platforms, the entire game feels like a bunch of Quick Time Events strung together. Even the combat system have the same Quick Time Event feel to it. Actually, it really feels like a giant Quick Time Event because a lot of times, it’ll actually tell you what button to press. On top of all this, you can’t die. Your magical, and nearly omnipotent, ally will always save you from death by knocking your enemy at the last possible moment. Even outside of combat, she will always magically reaches out and pulls you out of certain death. Having the entire possibility of dying really takes the edge out of a lot of the death defying acrobatics.
So with all this said, how is this game, which is really all about the thrill of those death defying acrobatics, any good? Well, just because the safety harness on a roller coaster ride keeps you from you know…dying doesn’t make the ride itself any less exhilirating. Whether jumping from wall to wall over a lush valley or sliding down the exterior of a 500 ft tower, Prince of Persia still manages to put a little bit of sweat in my palms. It doesn’t matter that you can’t lose, you still feel the excitement and appreciate the gracefulness of the prince spiralling his way up a disused tower without a staircase in sight. It also helps that it have a magnificent art style. The game is basically split up into 5 distinct areas. Each one is just as beautifully well done as the other. It’s not about the amount of texturing or bump maping or even the lighting that goes into the environment. it’s all about the insane amount of detail that goes into every inch of the environment. Add in some great voice acting and dialogue and even a little chemistry between the prince and his companion, suddenly it doesn’t matter that the game nearly plays itself.
Yes, this game is too easy, and it would’ve done the game wonders if it were just a little bit more challenging. But it makes the experience that much easier to absorb. And boy what an experience it is!
